USDF Episode 145: Balance in Movement Author Susanne von Dietz/ Pet Peeves of a Dressage Judge

In this week's episode we are joined by author Susanne von Dietze to talk about her book Balance in Movement and USEF Senior Judge Marilyn Heath joins us to share her pet peeves from a dressage judge’s point of view.

Marilyn Heath, Naples Florida is a USEF Senior Dressage Judge, L Education Program Faculty member, USDF L Program and Judges Committee member, and USDF Lifetime Achievement award Recipient.

Susanne von Dietz, Israel, trained and worked as a “Bereiter” in Germany for both dressage and show jumping while simultaneously working as a physiotherapist in a private clinic. Her focus was back pain and spinal injury. This combination of interests and abilities eventually led to her unique perspective and ways of teaching riding. Today, while competing at the top levels of international dressage competition, Susanne regularly gives seminars and clinics in Germany, Scandinavia, the United States, Japan, Finland, Hungary, and Australia, among others. She is the author of several books and DVDs.



USDF Episode 144: Mules at the 2016 US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan®/ Long Distance Hauling

In this week's episode, Laura Hermanson joins us to talk about her journey to qualify and compete at the US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan® in 2014 and 2016 riding two different mules and in Vet Connections Dr. Lewis gives tips on keeping horse healthy when hauling long distances.

Susannah Lewis, DVM, PhD, Lexington, KY, is completing an internship with Hagyard Equine Medical Institute’s Sport Horse Program. She received her doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 2015 from the University of Minnesota, where she also researched equine neuromuscular disorders. Dr. Lewis previously completed a PhD in neuroscience at the University of Colorado investigating chronic pain treatments. Raised in Iowa City, Iowa, she became involved with horses at a young age, riding dressage through 3rd level and being a groom for traveling dressage horses for 5 show seasons.



USDF Episode 143: 2016 US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan/Roamer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame Inductees Hilda Gurney and Keen

In this episode we wrap up the 2016 US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan, with an interview with USDF President George William. We also talk with Roamer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame inductee Hilda Gurney about her legendary two-time Olympic horse Keen who was also inducted into the Roamer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame 1997.

George Williams, has served as the USDF President since 2010. He is a FEI competitor, trainer, and clinician. He is a USDF Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalist. George is a USEF Youth Coach and also serves on multiple USEF committees.

Hilda Gurney, Moorpark, CA, is an USEF “S” Judge, and an “R” Breed Judge. Hilda has served on the USEF Dressage Committee for many years. In 1977 she was honored as the Martini and Rossi AHSA Horsewoman of the Year and in 2007 was inducted into the Roemer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame. Hilda earned an Olympic Team Bronze Medal in 1976, an individual Gold and Silver Medals, three Team Gold Medals at the Pan Am Games, and 6 USET National Grand Prix Championships on the legendary Roemer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame member, Keen.



USDF Episode 142: A Preview of the 2016 Adequan®/USDF Annual Convention

This episode is dedicated to the upcoming 2016 Adequan®/USDF Annual Convention being held November 30-December 3 in St Louis, MO. USDF Region 4 Director Anne Sushko will be joining us along with four of the featured education presentation speakers who give a sneak peek of what attendees will learn during their sessions.

Janice Dulak, Tolono, IL, is a former professional dancer, a Romana’s Pilates Master Instructor, author, and USDF Bronze Medalist. She chaired the dance department at Stephens College for 11 years and opened her first Pilates studio in 1993. Digging deeper into Pilates while starting to ride dressage led her to write “Pilates for the Dressage Rider” published in 2006. Her path from dancer to dressage rider, combined with her deep knowledge of the Pilates Method, created Pilates for Dressage®

Coralie Hughes, Coatesville, IN, is a Certified Practitioner of the Masterson Method of Performance Equine Bodywork. In addition to being a USDF Bronze medalist, Coralie is also a German to English translator and co-author of the Dressage Movements Revealed DVD set and The Dressage Horse Optimized.

Jen Verharen, Vashon, WA, is a professional performance and business coach. She is a USDF Certified Instructor, USDF L Program Graduate with Distinction, USDF Bronze and Silver Medalist, USPC Graduate A, and USPC National Examiner. She has a BA in Organizational Psychology/Mental Health and is a certified Health and Wellness Coach, Transformational Life Coach and mediator. Her business, Cadence Coaching, specializes in providing performance coaching and business training for equestrians.

Sandy Venneman PhD, Sealy, TX, is an experimental psychologist, with a lifetime teaching certificate in secondary education. Sandy combines psychology with 40 years of riding experience to help equestrians reach their potential. Her mounts have won USDF and USEA national titles. She coaches riders in the use of psychology to improve their riding with mounted and un-mounted clinics nationwide.



USDF Episode 141: US Dressage Finals/Embryo Transfer/Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum

This week USDF's Competition Department Manager Krystina Wright joins us to talk about the US Dressage Final presented by Adequan®. We learn about embryo transfer from Dr. Karen Wolfsdorf, and in our education segment, we have part 2 from the 2015 USDF Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum.

Dr.Karen Wolfsdorf, Lexington, KY, graduated from the University of Florida in 1992. In 1996, Dr. Wolfsdorf joined Hagyard Equine Medical Institute as an Associate and in 2002 she became one of the first two woman Members of the Practice. Dr. Wolfsdorf’s main area of interest is infertility in the mare and problems during pregnancy. She spends her time working as a field veterinarian and as a specialist at the McGee Fertility Center. Dr Wolfsdorf has authored many chapters on equine reproduction as well as lectured worldwide and published research.

This week Missy Ransehousen joins us to recap the 2016 Rio Paralympics. We have an interview with Yvonne Barteau, author of The Dressage Horse Manifesto, and an excerpt from the 2015 USDF Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum featuring Scott Hassler and Willy Arts.

Missy Ransehousen, Unionville, PA, operates Blue Hill Farm with her mother well known Olympic rider Jessica Ransehousen. Missy has made her own mark on the equestrian world being named 2011 USEF Para Coach of the year. Missy was selected as the coach for the 2000 Paralympics Team in Sydney and also coached the US Para Team to first place at the Pacific Rim Championships in 2006, and has served as Paralympics' coach in 2000, 2004,2008 & 2012.

Yvonne Barteau, Maple Park, IL, is a lifetime equestrian who has dedicated her life to understanding horses and preparing them for their careers. Yvonne has trained over ten horses to the Grand Prix Level. She and her husband Kim operate KYB Dressage LLC based out of Grand Prix Equestrian a state of the art dressage facility located approximately 50 miles west of Chicago. Yvonne has authored several books, including Ride the Right Horse, The Dressage Horse Manifesto, The Spirit of the Horse, and All the Kings Horsemen.

This week in our American Dressage Legends series we hear about 2007 Roemer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame inductee Edgar Hotz and USEF "S" Dressage Judge Kathy Rowse joins us to talk about using cones to improve your accuracy when riding.

Kathy Rowse, Suffolk, VA, owns and operates Silverleaf Farm with her husband Mike. Kathy is a USEF “S” dressage Judge, USDF L Program faculty member, and member of the USEF Youth Committee. She is a USDF Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalist who has coached numerous students to their USDF medals.



USDF Episode 138: Olympic Review/Steffen Peters and Robert Dover

This week we catch up with US Dressage Technical Advisor/Chef d'Equipe Robert Dover and four-time Olympic rider Steffen Peters as they talk about their Team Bronze medal and experiences at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Steffen Peters, San Diego, CA, was born in Wesel, Germany. In 1984 Peters met American trainer Laurie Falvo who invited him to work at her barn in San Diego. Since that time, he has represented the U.S. at numerous championships and earned many national titles. Peters won his first Olympic medal, a Team Bronze, at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games aboard Udon. He and Floriano were the alternates on the 2004 Athens Olympic team. In 2006, Peters and Floriano were the anchor on the Bronze medal-winning team at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games. Steffen has also been a featured presenter at the USDF FEI-Level Trainers Conference.

RobertDover, Wellington, FL, competed in his first Olympics in 1984. He competed in every summer Games between 1984 and 2004, winning four Team Bronze medals. He also took a team bronze at the 1994 World Equestrian Games. Dover is the most honored dressage rider in the United States, and has been inducted to the United States Dressage Federation Hall of Fame. In April 2013, Dover was named Technical Advisor/Chef d'Equipe for the US national dressage team. Dover founded the Equestrian Aid Foundation in 1996 to assist others in the equestrian world.

USDF Episode 136: 2016 Rio Olympic Games Special Edition

In this special episode, get to know Olympic athlete Laura Graves and Paralympic athlete Rebecca Hart.

Laura Graves, Geneva,FL, abandoned her career as a hairstylist to turn her unruly horse, Verdades, known as Diddy, into a dressage superstar. Chosen as a foal by her mother from a video, Graves advanced him up the levels herself with the guidance of several top trainers. Together Laura and Verdades won Team Gold and Individual Silver medals at the Pan American Games. Since then they have placed in the top FEI competitions and will be an exciting pair to watch.

Rebecca Hart, Unionville, PA, has represented the U.S. at several international events, including the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games. In 2014, she paired with her new mount, Schroeters Romani. They placed seventh in each of their three tests at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and won back-to-back USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championships in 2014 and 2015. Hart is a seven-time USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Champion.
